Chemical and Biological Defense

In response to Congressional interest in the readiness and effectiveness of U.S. Nuclear, Biological and Chemical (NBC) warfare defenses, Title XVII of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1994 (Public Law 103-160) required the Department of Defense (DoD) to consolidate management and oversight of the Chemical and Biological Defense (CBD) Program into a single office – Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Nuclear, Chemical and Biological Defense Programs. The mission of the Chemical and Biological Defense Program is to ensure that the U.S. military has the capability to operate effectively and decisively in the face of chemical or biological warfare threats at home or abroad.  The U.S. military requires the most up-to-date and state-of-the-art equipment and instrumentation to permit our Warfighters to detect to warn and avoid contamination, if possible, and to be able to sustain operations in a potentially compromised environment. The overall objective of the CBD SBIR Program is to identify, obtain and provide technical solutions from small businesses and to improve the transition or transfer of innovative Chem-Bio technologies to the end user – the Warfighter – in addition to commercializing technologies within the private sector for mutual benefit.

A nextgen 3D-printed modular design with built-in LED headlamp offers innovative ‘full-face to half-mask’ breakaway conversion and comes equipped with an impact and flash resistant wide-view lens integrated with thermal imaging, night vision and augmented reality tools for overlaying environmentally-based data into the user’s field of vision in real-time, allowing them a view into a world of pivotal data and intelligence. With the HRU-AR tactical mask a user can access and assign immersive AR (augmented reality) instructions on the job, relating to  relevant mission data, maximizing awareness, efficiency and performance.

An integral bluetooth communication system allows amplified speech and noise reduction to keep users calm, alert and focused no matter what the environment. In addition, a high-flow hydration conduit enables quick and easy access for drinking liquids. To maximize comfort and provide superior protection against target chemical warfare agents and toxic industrial chemicals for extended periods of use, the  HRU-ARis constructed from 3D-printed thermoplastic and elastomeric materials which share superior ballistic, chemical and flame resistant qualities. A separate oro-nasal mask module provides a secondary mask system that offers an extra level of protection against ingress and works with the exhalation structure to minimize the level of CO2 and breathing resistances lower than industry norm provide the wearer comfort and a significantly reduced physiological burden. The airflow design of the HRU-AR minimizes misting on the lens and the secondary system has the unique capability of automatically collecting and removing sweat from inside the mask. By combination of a highly advanced suite of  features, the HRU-AR provides superior physiological enhancement against CBRN threats and is designed to meet worldwide standards pertinent to a full face respirator to be used in civil emergency response duty. Regulatory standards currently met for mask and filters are NIOSH CBRN Cap-1 APR, NIOSH 42 CFR Parts 84.60(b) and 84.63(c)

The modular design of the  HRU-AR allows users to easily assemble, clean and maintain each element of the mask. Additionally,  the  HRU-AR™ CBRN tactical mask is compatible with all military, law enforcement and industrial DIN 40 threaded fittings, including conventional filters, Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), Powered Air Purifying Respirators (PAPR), and Compressed Airline Breathing Apparatus (CABA), making it virtually universal in design. The ability to switch between filters and supplied air is essential for environments where the threat is unknown. The revolutionary full-face to half mask breakaway system, combined with the ability to safely interchange modular designed parts enables the user to tailor their respiratory protection to their immediate needs without having to retire to a safe zone.
